Hitless Protection Switching Applications
Artel's white paper, Broadcasters Can't Miss with Hitless Technology, examines SMPTE ST 2022-7 Seamless Protection Switching. With ever-increasing demands for transporting high-bandwidth signals at improved quality levels, hitless protection switching has become a valuable tool for broadcasters. Multiple equipment and service providers have demonstrated interoperability between devices that support SMPTE ST 2022-7. As the only available technology that can withstand partial network outages lasting multiple seconds, coupled with the flexibility to support uncompressed UHD video and 10 Gbps data flows, hitless protection switching has a “can’t-miss” future in high reliability networking.
Transitioning to ATSC 3 with InfinityLink Solutions
Artel’s InfinityLink ATSC 3.0 Transition Solutions enable next-generation, over-the-air broadcast and content delivery for the new IP-based ATSC 3.0 standard while retaining legacy signal transport capabilities for ATSC 1.0. The InfinityLink ATSC 3.0 Transition Over Fiber and ATSC 3.0 Transition Over IP solutions include all necessary platform components and optical and/or electrical transceivers, ready for interconnection with either customer-furnished, single-mode fiber or a local, carrier-supplied IP GigE service.

The Need for Hitless Protection Switching
While being hitless isn’t a path to success for baseball batters (or aspiring rock stars), hitless signals are another thing entirely. Smooth, uninterrupted video and audio streams provide the best possible viewing and listening experiences. Live television broadcasts are very demanding environments for signal transmission and broadcasters have long been interested in technologies that can reduce or eliminate the number and intensity of signal disruptions.
