Artel’s New Award-Winning SMART OG Brings Software-Defined Functionality to openGear Platform

Artel Video Systems is proud to announce the release of the award-winning SMART Multimedia Delivery Platform in openGear® (SMART OG). A software-defined, four-channel auto-sense SD-SDI/HD-SDI/3G/4K-over-IP multifunction gateway, SMART OG is the first to bring the family of JPEG compression engines, including those specified in VSF TR-01, TR-07, and TR-08, onto the openGear platform. With SMART OG, users can deploy hardware once and easily change the gateway function via software update.

“We welcome Artel Video Systems as an openGear Partner and the company’s innovation in addressing today’s technical requirements with the SMART OG for the openGear platform,” said Bill Rounopoulos, business development manager, Hyperconverged Solutions, at Ross Video. “This addition to the openGear platform gives broadcasters the ability to implement the processing capabilities they need today and in the future.”

Winner of an NAB Show Product of the Year Award for 2021 in the Hardware Infrastructure category, Artel’s SMART OG offers exceptional flexibility in a popular frame. The gateway attaches seamlessly to the IP network without the need for external network elements. Users need only install hardware once and then use software updates to change the gateway’s functionality as needed. This approach to system implementation for broadcast and transport applications saves users time and reduces their costs and space requirements while increasing their agility in adapting to current and future technical requirements.

The SMART OG is initially configured for a specific function, but it may be adapted thereafter for a growing array of functions such as reformatting or encoding per JPEG2000, JPEG-XS, SMPTE ST 2110, SMPTE ST 2022-1/2/5/6/7, H.265, IEEE 1588, or other functions yet to be specified. The gateway provides four BNCs for SDI or ASI input/output and two 10GbE SFPs for trunking and aggregation.

“The SMART Media Delivery Platform addresses broadcasters’ need for operational simplicity, flexibility, and ubiquity during the industry’s transformation to IP, and our new SMART OG brings these benefits to the many users of openGear frames,” said Rafael Fonseca, vice president of product management at Artel. “SMART OG adds a new dimension to the openGear platform, which not only accepts cards from multiple vendors but now also supports software-defined functionality.”
