Artel Video Systems is a leading global provider of broadcast-quality media transport solutions for direct fiber, IP, and managed optical networks. For over 30 years, Artel has been pioneer in the industry, garnering many prestigious awards along the way:
EMMY Awards in Technology and Engineering
Every year the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) recognizes excellence in television with the Emmy Award. NATAS is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational, and technical advancements within the television industry.
The Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards is presented at a reception in conjunction with the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
2017 EMMY Award for Pioneering Reliable Transmission Method for Live Contribution and Distribution TV Links.
Over the last 10+ years, manufacturers have come up with diverse methods to use the economical public Internet to transport broadcast quality feeds from remote sites to their studio or network operations centers. These feeds have been used very successfully as either primary or backup feeds. In some cases, these ‘feeds’ have been used in remote or “at home” productions, as multiple backhaul feeds to network operation centers where production decisions are made in the studio rather than in mobile production trucks located in the field.
NATAS was tasked with investigating which companies have actively pursued advances in the technology for reliable transmission for live contribution and distribution TV links– also known as ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request).
ARQ has provided the underpinnings for developments in the delivery of live video over unmanaged networks such like the public internet. These developments have enabled leveraging the ubiquity & cost-effectiveness of the public Internet to help the industry reach new markets, develop new sources of revenue, transmit from locations where managed networks are not available, implement business continuity strategies, and improve the robustness of live broadcast quality video transmission over “lossy” networks.
“This Emmy Award, our second in four years, confirms that Artel is investing in, and focusing on, the right technology. Our customers need ways to reliably transmit high quality information over unmanaged networks in a cost-effective way. We are honored to be acknowledged for our efforts and look forward to continuing to provide innovative solutions to the market.”
– Rafael Fonseca, VP of Product Management, Artel Video Systems
Artel operationalized this technology in 2016 implementing it around a Linux based operating system, a comprehensive graphical interface that provides controllability and observability of all aspects of an ARQ deployment, and embedded software that makes the technology a deployable product with fault detection and isolation, alarming, monitoring, and internal resource management. The result was our ARQ IP Streaming System.
The ARQ IP Streaming Systems serves reliable Internet streaming transport and provides a simple-to-configure solution for the distribution of high-quality video over unconditioned IP networks, including wireless, the internet, and satellite. Being scalable in single stream increments, broadcasters can quickly add additional ARQ licenses to deliver multiple UDP unicast and multicast services.
2014 Emmy Award for Standardization and Productization of JPEG 2000 (J2K) Interoperability.
With the adoption of high definition video, picture quality and programming reached new levels of enjoyment for viewers. But this higher level of definition comes with added bandwidth adding capacity requirements in the transport and distribution of these high definition signals. Thus, the need for the development of a standard and productization of an encoder/decoder method that will reduce the bandwidth requirements to transport these signals but preserve picture and programming quality: the JPEG 2000 codec.
The Emmy Award recognizes Artel for its contribution in the development of VSF TR-01, a recommended practice for compressing SDI signals into JPEG 2000 and encapsulating the signals along with audio and ancillary data into an MPEG-2 TS for transport over IP networks.
IABM Broadcast and Media Awards
The IABM’s BaM Awards recognize outstanding technological innovations that deliver real business and creative benefits. The awards are the only truly independent technology awards in the industry and are widely recognized as the gold standard for rewarding broadcast and media innovation. There are multiple categories for the award, and they are built based on the BaM Content chain industry model (CREATE, PRODUCE, MANAGE, PUBLISH, MONETIZE, CONNECT, STORE, SUPPORT, and CONSUME). The judges are a panel of 40 independent, highly experienced industry professionals, each with specialist expertise in one or more of the award categories.
2017 Broadcast & Media Award Winner: Design & Innovation category
Artel won in the Content and Communication Infrastructure category for our SMART Media Delivery Platform. The SMART Media Delivery Platform™ is a four-channel auto-sense SD-SDI/HD-SDI/3G-over-IP multifunction gateway with an integrated nonblocking Layer 2/3 switch. The SMART Platform has been designed to attach seamlessly to the IP network without the need for external network elements. Functionality of the platform may be added or upgraded via software download. The flexibility in function capabilities, along with greater port density, drastically reduces power consumption, reduces size and cost, and allows for a seamless transition as the end user’s network evolves.
The industry is undergoing a transformation to IP and software-based workflows converging broadcast and IT in the industry. Our SMART platform does just that, as it combines the functionality of both worlds to serve as a gateway between the legacy digital media and the IP world. The main factor for our selection was the potential impact on the industry — innovations that really move the needle. The two main attributes of the SMART platform are:
- Software defined: the personality and functionality of the platform changes based on the SW application selected (deploy once and change functions as needed),
- Architecture that incorporates a Layer 2/3 switch with all the functionality needed to IP media networking.
2018 Broadcast & Media Award Finalist: Connect category
Artel Video Systems was chosen as an IABM Broadcast and Media Awards 2018 Finalist in the Connect category for the company’s SMART Media Delivery Platform™.
The SMART Platform is a four-channel auto-sense SD-SDI/HD-SDI/3G-over-IP multifunction gateway with an integrated nonblocking Layer 2/3 switch. The SMART Platform has been designed to attach seamlessly to the IP network without the need for external network elements. Functionality of the platform may be added or upgraded via software download.
